Brightleaf Stables is a horse stable in Durham that offers western style riding lessons for any skill level. Whether it’s your first introduction to horses or you are a seasoned equestrian we offer lessons tailored to you. Brightleaf is open by appointment as we would like to give you our full attention during your session.
Brightleaf Sprouts
A child is never too young to learn to ride. Sprout ages start at 4years and can come enjoy the fun of horses even at a young age. Children will get up close and personal with our safe and gentle horses. Work on fine motor skills with brushing and grooming horses. During the lessons Sprouts will spend some time on a horse lead by our instructor. Parents are encouraged (but not required) to stay during the duration of the lesson to enjoy and even participate. Children will be engaged with fun games and activities alongside our equines. Because our little ones tend to have shorter attention spans, Sprout lessons may be offered in shorter increments. This is a private one on one experience with an instructor.

Riding Lessons
Geared for all riders starting at 6 years of age and up!! Our riding program is perfect for those students who are eager to immerse themselves in all things equine related. Students will discover that while riding horses is a fun activity they come with a fair share of work and responsibility. In addition to riding, students will learn the importance of proper horse care, feed & nutrition, grooming, cleaning, and tacking up. Our students will understand the basics of horseback riding, instilling safe and natural horsemanship skills. Our lessons are not your traditional ride around the ring, instructor in the middle, setup. We engage our riders by providing obstacle courses and games to help with steering and control, we will spend some lessons bareback to encourage balance and can incorporate trail work when the rider is ready. Brightleaf offers western style lessons with western equipment/tack. All lessons are semi private as we have several instructors that may be teaching at the same time. Students may be warming up together and then can branch on to individual work.
